Today’s post is about Christianity and health. This is a topic that is rarely discussed in Christian circles and yet it occupies a significant part of the bible.
Christianity and Health
Although health plays such a vital part, literally, in everyone’s life, although it has profound effects on spiritual well-being, and although it receives significant attention in the Bible, the topic gets little notice form the majority of Christian churches. Only a few Christians afford it a prominent and honored place in their teachings.
This is a scriptural attitude. The Bible shows a concern for the whole man: body, soul, and spirit, or the physical, spiritual, and mental welfare of each member of the human family. It is therefore right for Bible-believing Christians to hold a doctrine that relates health to the practice of religion.
When we recognize the Bible’s interest in our physical well-being, we should also perceive the converse implications of that interest, namely, our responsibility toward God in matters relating to health. That is part of the balanced, holistic view of life and religion that has always been embedded in Old and New Testament writings.
The Creator did not make man by bringing together independent parts and pieces, but “formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen. 2:7), complete, indivisible, with neither body nor spirit able to subsist apart from the other. From this, it follows that the welfare of the one is closely related to the welfare of the other.
Such an analysis lies behind Paul’s counsel to his converts in Corinth as he advised them, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31). They were to realize that every department of their lives was to be touched by their responsibility toward God.
No section could be roped off, sealed from the influence and control of their newfound Christianity. All their daily actions, even those of eating and drinking, were to contribute to God’s glory.
As you can see the bible has a lot to say on Christianity and health.
