What The Old Testament Says About The Second Coming of Christ
Soon after the dawn of civilization, Old Testament prophets began speaking of Christ’s glorious second advent. “And Enoch also, the seventh form Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints.” Jude 14
This same precious assurance sustained Job during his days of affliction fifteen hundred years before Christ. “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.” Job 19:25,26.
The psalmist was inspired to describe the glory of Christ’s return: “Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” Psalm 50:3-5.
The prophet Isaiah visualized the splendor of the return of Christ: “For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many.” Isaiah 66:15,16.
Jeremiah, Daniel, Joel, Zephaniah, Haggai, Malachi, and other Old Testament writers believed in and wrote concerning the glorious second coming. Through the centuries this blessed hope has sustained prophets and kings, priests and laymen, alike.
