In this post, we are going to discuss the gift of prophecy in scripture.
The Gift of Prophecy In Scripture
The two listings of spiritual gifts from Paul’s pen are not identical. In 1 Corinthians 12:28, he refers to apostles, prophets, teachers, miracles, healings, helps, governments, and diversities of tongues. In Ephesians 4:11 he lists apostles, prophets, and teachers, adds evangelists and pastors, and omits the five remaining gifts found in the Corinthian letter. From this, it is clear that neither list is exhaustive.
But apostles and prophets hold the first two places in each listing and are doubtless seen as occupying positions in church leadership. In the beginning, an essential qualification for apostleship was that of having been one of the eleven disciples or, like Matthias, elected to replace Judas or, like Paul, dramatically chosen for a specialized ministry.
By the end of the first century, however, the original holders of the office had all died and their mantles had been placed on other less famous, shoulders, though the responsibilities of leadership were similar to those of their predecessors.
In addition to the first apostles, several prophets appear in the New Testament narrative, and there are no grounds for supposing that prophets were meant to disappear from Church service in succeeding centuries.
