The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit
As is always the case in spiritual matters, our Exemplar is Jesus Christ. As the Holy Ghost came upon Mary and she conceived by the Spirit (Luke 1:35; Matt. 1:18,20), so the Christian is to be “born of the Spirit” (John 3:5,6). As at our Lord’s baptism “the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him” (Luke 3:22), so the newly baptized is promised “the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38). The parallels are too remarkable to ignore, though they should strike awe into the perceptive heart.
It should not surprise us that the Savior needed the Spirit’s cooperation for success in defeating the devil and rescuing men, women, and children from his clutches. The responsibility for salvation was a triple one, borne by Father, Son, and Spirit. The Son did not work in isolation, independently of the other two members of the Godhead, but operated closely with them and was supported by them throughout His redemptive mission.
When Jesus publicly announced His vocation to His fellow townsfolk in Nazareth, He invoked the Spirit’s authority and endowment in the work He had just begun. He declared to his fellow citizens that “the Spirit of the Lord” had anointed Him to preach, to heal, to deliver, to restore sight, and to liberate (Luke 4:18). The sequel to that announcement was the miracle-working life of Him “who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil” (Acts 10:38).
Each Christian has been called to continue the work his Lord so graciously began. That commission can be fulfilled only in the power of the Spirit by the giving and acceptance and employment of that selfsame Spirit’s gifts.
If the Son of God needed to be empowered by the Spirit for His ministry, surely His followers, faulty and frail, wholly human as they are, also need to be endued with the Spirit’s power, knowledge, guidance, and gifts for the fulfillment of the responsibilities the Master has placed upon.
