Below is a very touching story and testimony about the song or hymn, Does Jesus Care.
Many years ago I sat in a small church in Florida listening to this hymn sung by a quartet:
“Does Jesus care when I’ve said ‘good-bye’
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches
Till it nearly breaks—-
Is this aught to Him? does He see?”
The words echoed a question tugging painfully at my heart, for the occasion was my mother’s funeral. Did Jesus really care when I said good-bye to the dearest on earth to me?
Then with beautiful assurance, the words of the chorus rang out:
“O yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary,
The long nights dreary,
I know my Saviour cares.”
Frank E Graeff
Friend of mine, when our sad hearts ache till they nearly break, what a comfort it is to know that Jesus does care, that His great heart of love is touched with our grief.
When we walk with loved ones into the valley of the shadow of death, there is little lasting comfort that human lips can speak. Our friends take us by the hand and speak a few words, and we deeply appreciate their sympathy, but words do not fully heal a breaking heart. Only the certainty of God’s word – His promises – can truly soothe the aching heart.
Jesus was “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief…He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows.” (Isaiah 53:3,4.) On Calvary, the mental agony was greater than the physical torture, and Jesus died of a broken heart. He does indeed understand our anguish, for He, too, has suffered.
He has shown through the ages how much He cares. “For he said, Surely they are my people:…he was their Saviour. In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.” Isaiah 63:8,9.
It is true, as Paul says, that “we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” (Hebrews 4:15.) As the Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, Christ enters into our heartaches and disappointments.
These words were written by one who knew from personal experience that Jesus cares: “Our heavenly Father is never unmindful of those whom sorrow has touched…To every stricken one, Jesus comes with the ministry of healing. The life of bereavement, pain, and suffering may be brightened by precious revealings of His presence.” —Ellen G. White, Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 11,12.
Today, if your heart is aching because you have lost a loved one, look up, behold your loving Father in heaven with His message of comfort for you. Wise Augustine said, “Let God cover thy wounds: do not thou.” Then he explains that when you try to cover wounds alone, the hurt is only concealed, but that if God does it for you they are healed. – Robert H Pierson, 1968
Does Jesus Care Hymn Lyrics
Below are the lyrics of this beautiful hymn.
1 Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song;
As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
And the way grows weary and long?
Refrain:
O, yes, He cares – I know He cares!
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares, He cares.
2 Does Jesus care when my way is dark
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near? [Refrain]
3 Does Jesus care when I’ve tried and failed
To resist some temptation strong;
When for my deep grief there is no relief,
Though my tears flow all the night long? [Refrain]
4 Does Jesus care when I’ve said goodbye
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks —
Is it aught to Him? Does He see? [Refrain]
